Some History Prior to 2005, the Written Qualifying Exam was administered in two parts, one being "applied" and one "theoretical." They were each three hour exams, offered on a single day at the end of Spring Quarter. Students were expected to take and pass both exams. In 2004, the Department changed its core curriculum, creating three new course sequences: 200 (theory), 201 (application/methodology) and 202 (computation). At that time, the Written Qualifying Exam was also expanded to incorporate a component corresponding to each core sequence. Now however, students are only required to take two of the three exams. In 2005, the exam was also moved from the end of Spring Quarter to just before the beginning of Fall Quarter.
